Since exploding onto the racing scene in 1979, Modifieds have become the calling card of dirt track racing, thrilling legions of new race fans every year. These high-flying, open-wheel stock cars push the limits of power and excitement on short tracks from coast to coast. Racing in front of millions of spectators each year, and have gained a reputation for fierce competitiveness that is an unique as the car itself.

There are many variations that have developed over the years. From the golden oldies to the big block East Coast modifieds fans are, and have been thrilled with the excitement of open wheel dirt track racing since it's inception. I currently run in a NASCAR Weekly Racing Series at Adams County Speedway. This is a highly competitive class featuring drivers that have won NASCAR modified national championships and IMCA region championships.
The dirt modified that I drive is a FR-1 Racemart chassis out of Memphis, Missouri. The front stub is a late 70's metric GM frame. All of the modifieds in my division have to use a stock stub from a production passenger car. The engines are V-8 Chevy and Fords primarily, though Mopar is trying to work their way into the sport. We race on an American Racer tires, with everyone having to use the same rubber compound to keep cost down. The fuel can be either gasoline or methanol. Drivers have to wear flame retardant suits and five point harnesses for safety. The IMCA style modifieds have a claim in which drivers can claim or buy the engine of a competitor that finishes in the top four of the feature. Speeds can vary depending on track size with cars running upward of 105 MPH.
There's allot of action at a track near you, so get out there on a Friday or Saturday night and be prepared to eat dirt. Or mud if it's in your beer!
